The History Hour - European Consciousnes and capitalist overseas empire-building
March 7
Host Charles Jeanes spends a very little time on current events and launches into early modern history of Europe's expansion overseas to the New World and Asia from Columbus to Karl Marx. Jeanes analyses how new capitalism is different from all previous economic systems, and how this gave Europe its lead over the rest of the world. He contrasts Renaissance mind and thinking with the new Scientific mentality of the late 17th century: Ancients vs. Moderns.
He addresses questions of philanthropy by billionaires like Gates and Branson.
Jeanes critiques the theorists and philosophers of Spiritual-Consciousness Evolution. The West remains supreme over the world in all spheres including having the "leading edge thinkers" like Wilber and Beck. Comparison of various "stages of history and mind" theory: Hegel, Marx, Freud, Maslow, Beck, Wilber, Gebser, W.I. Thompson.

The History Hour - Stages of Consciousness and the world political order
Feb 22
Jeanes ends his sketches of pre-modern, medieval mind and mentality (consciousness of the Middle Ages) with references from Johan Huizinga and Jacques Barzun.
Current event Editorials: Canada's Afghan Mission; Australia's apology to its Aborigines.
A review of the thoughts of Steve McIntosh, a political theorist of Spiral Dynamics. McIntosh offers his analysis of the politics of modern, post-modern and integral consciousness.
He theorizes about the backward state of Third World nations and the need to protect First World prosperity from regression in a hypothetical future united world. If the poor nations were allowed a one-person, one-vote power in a global democratic government, they would regress the advanced nations.
McIntosh makes a controversial, strongly-worded critique of the primitivism of Islam and why it is not a modern civilization.
World Report - Can NATO bring peace to Afghanistan?
The panel on Canada's future role in Afghanistan has recommended that our allies provide an additional 1000 troops in the south. But it's clear from testimony by the American commander of the mission that this won't be even close to enough. And that's not the only reason to suspect that NATO may not have what it takes to make peace in Afghanistan.

The History Hour - Renaissance Consciousness: humanism, secularism, emancipation
The show's host continues to narrate Western European historical change in consciousness, from medieval through Renaissance and Reformation, or the century from 1450 to 1550. Jeanes refers to a dark age in the period 1550 to 1650, an era of religious wars and church persecutions, before the age of the Scientific Revolution. William Thompson, an historian, recognizes that Dark Ages precede the rise of a new stage of consciousness or mentality.
The host reads a review of Charles Taylor's newest book, A Secular Age.
Jeanes takes issue with the lack of any depth of knowledge of concrete History -- of Europe, Asia or other cultures -- in the study by the major theorists of evolving consciousness, Dr. Don Beck and Ken Wilber. Including all cultures on earth from 500 BC to 1500 AD in one category called "traditional religious" or the Blue mentality, is not sufficiently nuanced.
