Kootenay Co-op Radio is offering their Third Annual Youth Radio Camp this summer!
The camp was such a soaring success the past two summers that there was no other option but to offer it again, and we're so glad that we are!
New to the project is Youth Radio Camp Coordinator Jordana Bartinger. With a background in Film and Acting, Jordana is delighted to be part of the Camp. "I'm so happy to be working for Kootenay Co-op Radio and especially to be part of the camp! Growing up in Nelson it was always so important to me to have mentors and teachers who supported us in the arts; it really gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams in film after I graduated. I love the idea of kids getting their voice out there on the radio, even if it's just goofy fun...Nelson is their town too, this is there community too...it's so cool to be able to offer them a chance to get involved."
Youth who are registered for the camp weeks will receive hands on training in radio production, technical and sound board application, journalistic reporting, spoken word pieces, radio plays and how to plan a radio show. They will also learn the importance of community cooperatives, community radio and experience the magic of being local radio stars! Campers of each week will work together to produce a live hour-long show, making radio history.
Camp weeks will run Monday through Friday, 9am to 3pm. The camp weeks and age groups are going to be:
July 12-16: Ages 8-11
July 19-23: Ages 11-14
August 9-20: Ages 15-18 (two weeks Monday to Friday $350)
Cost for registration is $200 for KCR Members, $250 for Non-KCR Members and bursaries are available.
Along with the new Camp Coordinator Kootenay Co-op Radio is excited to announce a few other changes to this year's program. First, campers will be collaborating with Amy Bohigian's Watershed Summer Digital Film Camp campers. We're planning on getting our campers together during the weeks to collaborate and create some PSA's; give the youth a chance to experience another media forum and discover how to think outside the box to translate ideas into different mediums.
Also, Kootenay Co-op Radio has been working and collaborating with Self Design High to allow the oldest group of campers to receive four high school credits for the camp. Instead of just one week campers will get two weeks to dive deeper into the world of community radio. This will give the campers an opportunity to explore more areas of working in radio and give them a chance to broadcast two different shows in opposite genres. It's a really fun and creative way to get some credits not to mention looks fantastic on a resume!
If you wish to register or have any questions Youth Radio Camp Coordinator, Jordana Bartinger, is available to take calls and questions Monday to Friday at the station office (308A Hall Street) at 250-352-9600, or through e-mail at .
