Natural Life Magazine
Natural Life Magazine - May/June'08

We have come a long way in a short amount of time from the age when our days were filled hunting and gathering our sustenance. Conveniences now abound, it has become increasingly possible to put food into our body without barely raising a finger or an eyebrow. This lifestyle of convenience leaves very little time to reflect on the history behind the food we purchase and the impact these purchases have on ourselves, our communities, and the earth.

With food occupying such a significant part of our lives, understanding the implications of our food choices can create a real sense of empowerment and self-determination.

Produced and recorded in the studios of Kootenay Co-op Radio in Nelson, British Columbia, Deconstructing Dinner has been created to dispense and discuss current food issues. The program assists listeners in making more educated choices when purchasing food either for the kitchen or at restaurants.

Currently broadcast on 39 radio stations across Canada, Deconstructing Dinner also appears on stations around the world. All episodes are accessible through the Internet in live, archived and podcasting formats. (How to Listen)

The media plays a key role in keeping Canadians informed, however, Deconstructing Dinner believes that the most important stories about our food supply are not receiving adequate attention. As a result, we are rapidly losing sight of the most fundamental part of our lives - feeding ourselves.

There are countless groups, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, businesses, individuals and various levels and branches of government that are pushing towards creating more sustainable food systems. Yet to date, the media has played a minor role in tying these people together and broadcasting this important information to the people that matter most - you!

Deconstructing Dinner reports on current issues throughout the world of food but maintains a focus on local food systems. The show is not restricted to only current affairs, but probes into the processes and actions to which we have all become so accustomed throughout our daily routine, and "deconstructs" them to achieve a more discriminating awareness.

Jon Steinman
Jon Steinman

Behind the creation of Deconstructing Dinner is Nelson, British Columbia resident Jon Steinman. Jon grew up in Southern Ontario and arrived in B.C. in 2004. Before his western migration, Jon was exposed to the world of food systems while studying at the University of Guelph. After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce in Hotel & Food Administration, he worked within restaurants that were fostering more personal relationships with their suppliers (farmers)! These experiences played an important role in Jon's eventual interest to advocate for more responsible food systems.

Having been no stranger at the time to publicly sharing his views through his columns in PULSE Niagara, VIEW Magazine and Off-Centre Magazine, Jon was inspired by the potential of radio as a medium to communicate information that the mainstream media was not. Upon arriving in Nelson, Kootenay Co-op Radio (CJLY) was a young but established member-owned community station who welcomed Jon as part of their award-winning morning news programme Nelson Before Nine. From there, the groundwork was laid for what would later become Deconstructing Dinner.

Deconstructing Dinner is a one-hour weekly radio show that examines the impacts that our food choices have on ourselves, our communities and the earth. Since episode number one aired in January 2006, the show has grown to now be heard weekly on 39 Canadian radio stations and 9 in the United States. Episodes are also available through a weekly podcast.

Since 2006, Jon has acted as a Director of the Kootenay Country Store Co-operative - the largest independent member-owned food co-operative in Canada. He sits on the steering committee of Community Food Matters - a coalition of Nelson-area residents who are inspired to foster a more food-secure community. Jon is also a member of and involved in advisory capacities with the Kootenay Grain CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) - Canada's first CSA for grain, Soil Matters CSA, and Genetically Engineered (G.E.) Free Kootenays.

Jon is an established writer, having been published in Orion Magazine, Briarpatch Magazine, Small Farm Canada, and Synergy Magazine among others.

Jon is in increasing demand as a public speaker and he speaks at many food security and agricultural conferences and events.

Jon believes food deserves far more attention than it currently receives and that we owe it to ourselves, each other and the earth to fully understand the implications of our food choices.

correspondents
andrea langlois Andrea Langlois fell in love with the medium of radio when a friend of hers built a pirate radio station and broadcasted out of her living room. She has a background in media studies and was involved in the Indymedia movement for a few years. After receiving her masters in media studies from Concordia University, Andrea went on to co-edit a collection of essays entitled "Autonomous Media: Activating Resistance and Dissent". Andrea got her radio start at CKUT radio in Montreal, went on to be a host of CJLY's popular Nelson Before Nine for two seasons. Her passion for food issues was sparked by a summer working on a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm, and later set into flames when she was the Coordinator of the Nelson Food Cupboard. She now lives in Victoria where she is an avid gardener and foodie.

john ryan John Ryan is the glue holding the live broadcasts of Deconstructing Dinner together. While Jon Steinman and guests share insights into our food, John orchestrates the technical elements of each broadcast.
